If you’ve been scrolling TikTok or Spotify in the last year, you’ve probably heard the haunting, heartfelt voice of sombr (stylized in all lowercase). At just 20 years old, this New York native has gone from skating the streets of the Lower East Side to headlining arenas and closing out shows at Madison Square Garden. His story is the ultimate Gen-Z fairytale: bedroom recordings, viral heartbreak anthems, and a meteoric rise that’s redefining alternative pop-rock. Sombr’s Incredible Journey!

The Early Days: A Skater Boy from New York City

Shane Michael Boose was born on July 5, 2005, in New York City and raised on the vibrant Lower East Side. His parents, Bennah Serfaty and Andy Boose, both worked in the arts and nonprofit world, giving him an early appreciation for creativity.

As a teenager, Shane was a classic skater boy — cruising city streets, pulling tricks, and living for late-night adventures. Music was always part of his life, though. He attended the prestigious LaGuardia High School (the Fame school) as a vocal major, training in classical voice. But the pull of making his own music was stronger. At just 14, he turned his bedroom into a makeshift studio and started writing, recording, and producing tracks late into the night.

Skateboarding eventually took a backseat after he broke his arm multiple times — he couldn’t risk injuring his hands and losing the ability to play instruments. That sacrifice paid off.

Choosing the Name “Sombr”: Heartbreak and Initials

In 2021, Shane released his first music under the name sombr. He created it by blending his initials S.M.B. with the word “somber” — reflecting a dark, emotional period in his life. The lowercase styling and melancholic vibe perfectly matched the raw, introspective sound he was crafting in his bedroom.

He dropped out of LaGuardia during his junior year after his song “Caroline” (released in 2022 when he was just 16–17) started gaining traction online. It was a bold move that signaled his full commitment to music.

The TikTok Breakthrough: Viral Hits That Changed Everything - Sombr’s Incredible Journey

Sombr’s real explosion came in early 2025. Songs like “back to friends” and “undressed” went massively viral on TikTok, racking up hundreds of millions of streams. “Back to Friends” became a global phenomenon — hitting the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending weeks at No. 1 on Spotify Global charts, and dominating alternative radio.

Other standout tracks from his 2025 debut album I Barely Know Her include:

  • 12 to 12

  • “Homewrecker”

  • “we never dated”

His sound blends indie rock, alt-pop, and emotional introspection, drawing influences from artists like Jeff Buckley, Phoebe Bridgers, Radiohead, and even classic rock legends. Fans connect deeply with his vulnerable lyrics about heartbreak, situationships, and the messy realities of young love.

By mid-2025, his monthly Spotify listeners skyrocketed from around 10 million to over 50 million. He earned MTV VMAs recognition and Grammy buzz, proving he wasn’t just a TikTok flash-in-the-pan.

From Bedroom to Big Stages: The Arena Era

What started in a small New York bedroom has now taken sombr to festival main stages (including Coachella 2026, where he performed with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins) and sold-out headline shows.

In 2026, he’s embarking on his biggest run yet: the You Are The Reason Tour — his first major arena tour. The 37-date North American leg kicks off in Mexico City, hits iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre (two nights), Rogers Arena, Climate Pledge Arena, and more, before wrapping with a hometown triumph at Madison Square Garden on November 23, 2026.

Rotating openers include heavy hitters like Interpol, The Last Dinner Party, King Princess, Tom Odell, and Dove Cameron. It’s a clear sign that sombr has leveled up from intimate club shows to filling arenas.

Why Sombr’s Journey Resonates So Deeply

At only 20, Shane Boose has already lived the dream many young artists chase: staying authentic while scaling massive success. His music feels personal — like late-night voice memos turned into anthems. Whether you’re healing from a situationship or just vibing to raw emotion, sombr delivers.

He continues releasing new music, including the 2026 single “Potential,” keeping fans hooked as he evolves from viral sensation to established rock-pop force.

The Skater Boy Who Made It

From breaking arms on skateboards in NYC to breaking records on global charts, sombr’s journey proves that talent, vulnerability, and a little bedroom magic can take you all the way to arena lights.
