Metric, the iconic Canadian indie rock band, has captivated audiences for over 25 years with their blend of new wave, post-punk, synth-pop, and raw emotional lyricism. Led by charismatic frontwoman Emily Haines and co-founder/multi-instrumentalist James Shaw, Metric has evolved from underground electronic experiments to mainstream success while staying true to their independent spirit. Here's a comprehensive timeline of the band's journey, from their 1998 origins to their highly anticipated 10th studio album, Romanticize the Dive, set for release in 2026. Metric Band Timeline!

1998–2002: Formation and Early Days as Mainstream

Metric began in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, when Emily Haines (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and James Shaw (guitar, keyboards, production) formed a duo initially called Mainstream. Haines, daughter of poet Paul Haines, and Shaw, a Juilliard-trained musician, had met earlier and bonded over electronic music influences. They released the Mainstream EP in 1998, featuring early demos with a heavy electronic bent.

By the early 2000s, the project evolved. They relocated between Toronto, Montreal, New York, and London, experimenting with sounds. Bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key joined around 2000–2001 (with early bassist Jarrett Mason briefly in the lineup until 2002). The name changed to Metric—inspired by a precise beat saved on Shaw's sampler and their focus on musical accuracy. They released the EP Static Anonymity in 2001 as a bridge to their full band era.

2003: Debut Album and Breakthrough - Metric Band Timeline

Metric's official debut, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, arrived on September 2, 2003, via Last Gang Records. Tracks like "Combat Baby" and "Dead Disco" mixed new wave energy with indie rock edge. Critically acclaimed (Pitchfork praised its "off-kilter" style), the album went gold in Canada and positioned Metric alongside peers like Broken Social Scene, The New Pornographers, and Feist in the thriving Canadian indie scene.

2005–2006: Rise with Live It Out and Major Exposure

Their sophomore album, Live It Out (September 27, 2005), brought bigger success. Singles "Monster Hospital," "Poster of a Girl," and "Empty" earned Juno Award nominations (Alternative Album of the Year) and a Polaris Music Prize shortlist. Certified platinum in Canada, it solidified their reputation. In 2006, Metric opened for the Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden— a massive milestone.

2007–2009: Grow Up and Blow Away and Fantasies Era

Grow Up and Blow Away (2007) compiled earlier recordings with a raw, electronic feel. Then came their commercial peak: Fantasies (2009) featured hits like "Help I'm Alive" and "Gold Guns Girls." It earned widespread acclaim, multiple Juno wins, and global touring success, including festival appearances.

2012–2015: Synth Evolution with Synthetica and Pagans in Vegas

Synthetica (2012) leaned into synth-heavy production and themes of technology and identity. Pagans in Vegas (2015) further embraced electronic elements with fewer guitars, reflecting a bolder, dance-oriented shift.

2018–2022: Art of Doubt and Formentera Series

Art of Doubt (2018) returned to guitar-driven rock with introspective lyrics. After a pandemic pause, Metric released Formentera (2022) and its companion Formentera II (2023), blending indie rock with atmospheric, reflective vibes.

2024–2026: Greatest Hits and the New Chapter – Romanticize the Dive

In late 2024, Metric dropped Greatest Hits Vol. 2. But 2026 marks a major return: Their 10th studio album, Romanticize the Dive, is scheduled for April 24, 2026, via Thirty Tigers. Lead single "Victim of Luck" is a soaring electro-pop anthem with crunchy drums, lush synths, and Haines' signature introspective delivery—reflecting on early fearless ambition versus modern fears. The album revisits the band's roots while addressing today's music landscape ("solo artists and billionaires").

Metric has announced a major 2026 tour, including dates with Broken Social Scene and Stars (e.g., Moody Amphitheater in Austin on June 8, South Side Ballroom in Dallas on June 9, and more North American stops).
