The Vans Warped Tour is the legendary traveling music festival that defined summer for generations of punk, emo, pop-punk, and alternative fans. Launched in 1995 as a gritty celebration of punk rock, skate culture, and youth rebellion, it became the longest-running touring festival in the U.S., launching countless careers before pausing after 2019. In 2025, it made a triumphant return for its 30th anniversary, and now in 2026, it's expanding with more cities and massive lineups. As the festival revives its high-energy, multi-stage magic, fans are flocking to secure tickets for the ultimate punk rock experience. Vans Warped Tour History!

Origins: Kevin Lyman's Vision in 1995

Founded by Kevin Lyman (with early partner Ray Woodbury), the Warped Tour debuted in 1995 as an eclectic alternative rock festival inspired by extreme sports events like the X Games. It paired live music with skate ramps, BMX demos, and a DIY vibe, touring 24 dates across the U.S.

The inaugural lineup featured acts like Sublime, No Doubt, Quicksand, L7, and Sick of It All—a mix of punk, ska, and alternative that captured the era's underground energy. Though rough around the edges (including a memorable incident where Sublime was briefly kicked off for chaos), it set the tone as "Punk Rock Summer Camp."

In 1996, shoe brand Vans signed on as title sponsor, becoming Vans Warped Tour—a partnership that lasted decades and tied the event to skate and street culture.

Peak Years: 1990s–2000s – Launching Legends and Defining Scenes

The tour exploded in popularity through the late '90s and 2000s, evolving into a punk/emo/pop-punk powerhouse while still mixing genres (ska, hardcore, rap, metal, even early nu-metal and country crossovers).

Key milestones:

  • 1990s: Bands like Pennywise, NOFX, Blink-182, Green Day (early appearances), and Less Than Jake helped solidify its punk cred.

  • Early 2000s: It became the launchpad for My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Avenged Sevenfold, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, and more. Hits from Simple Plan, Sum 41, and Yellowcard dominated Warped stages.

  • Mid-2000s–2010s: Acts like Katy Perry (early), Eminem, Black Veil Brides, Pierce the Veil, Sleeping with Sirens, and Bring Me the Horizon appeared, showing its genre-spanning influence.

At its height, Warped drew over 500,000 fans annually across 40+ cities, with multiple stages, side tents for merch/flea markets, autograph signings, and extreme sports demos. It fostered community, accessibility (affordable tickets), and discovery—many fans' first live show experience.

The End of an Era: 2018 Finale and 2019 Anniversary

By the late 2010s, challenges mounted: declining ticket sales among younger demographics, rising production costs, and Lyman's burnout after 24 years.

In November 2017, Lyman announced 2018 as the final full cross-country run—a massive farewell with lineups including Simple Plan, Mayday Parade, The Used, Motionless in White, and more.

For the 25th anniversary in 2019, Warped returned modestly with three events (Cleveland, Atlantic City, Mountain View), featuring nostalgic acts like Blink-182 alumni and others.

After 2019, the tour went on hiatus—fans mourned the end of an institution that shaped alternative music culture.

Triumphant Return: 2025 30th Anniversary Revival

In October 2024, Kevin Lyman confirmed the comeback! Partnering with Insomniac Events, Warped celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025 with three two-day festivals:

  • Washington, D.C. (June 14–15 at RFK Campus)

  • Long Beach, California (July 26–27 at Shoreline Waterfront)

  • Orlando, Florida (November 15–16 at Camping World Stadium Campus)

Each stop featured 70–100 bands, accessible pricing (weekend passes from $149.98), and a focus on connection, raw energy, and introducing new generations to the Warped spirit. The revival tapped into nostalgia while proving the format's enduring appeal.

2026: Expansion and the Future - Vans Warped Tour History

Building on 2025's success, Vans Warped Tour 2026 expands to five stops, adding international flavor:

  • June 13–14: Washington, D.C. (Festival Grounds at RFK Campus)

  • July 25–26: Long Beach, California (Shoreline Waterfront)

  • August 21–22: Montreal, Quebec (Parc Jean-Drapeau)

  • September 12–13: Mexico City (Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez)

  • November 14–15: Orlando, Florida (Camping World Stadium Campus)

Lineups continue to roll out with heavy-hitters like Jimmy Eat World, The Used, Dance Gavin Dance, and dozens more announced weekly. It's a bolder, global revival—keeping the multi-stage chaos, community vibe, and discovery ethos alive.
